Bae Ho-Joong

Han Chang-Keun
Abstract
This study aims to examine whether student loan of female graduates from 4-year universities influences marriage. For this research purpose, this study uses survival analyses with the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) data. We measured the student loans data especially on the basis of experience of student loan, duration of student loan, amount of student loan and categorical dummy variables of the total amount of student loan. We found that the study group with student loan (the 4 type measurements of student loan) is less likely to get married during the study period. It means that female graduates with student loan were found to delay their marriage controlling for covariates. Additionally, we found that the quality of employment (salary and large company with 300 employees or more) is also an influential factor of getting married. While students are facing diverse difficulties to sustain their quality of life, existing research is limited to analyze the situations of youth in Korea. In this regard, the findings of this research will provide implications in that student loan should be a policy target to support youth to move out of the vicious cycle of debts.
